Hey! I never got far from Duke (except for 4 years in Savannah, Ga.) I worked in Peds at Duke (with Kim Fish and Sue Warren) for a couple of years, then moved to PICU. I earned an MSN at UNC and worked as a Clinical Nurse Specialist with Peds Cardiology/Cardiac Surgery from 1989 to 1996. I married Kevin Doyle in 1996 (when he finished his ENT residency) and we spent the first four years in Savannah while he fulfilled an army commitment. I have 2 daughters, Caroline (96) and Claire (99) and have been home with them. We moved to the Raleigh area when my husband joined Raleigh ENT in 2001. I stay busy volunteering at their schools and working on the neighborhood HOA. I still live for basketball season and make it to most of the home games. I just started looking at opportunities to go back to work. I hope many of you will make it to the Reunion!

My life has certainly had a lot of changes in the last 25 years. From Duke I went to Johns Hopkins and worked on the pediatric oncology floor which I truly loved. I gave lots of chemo and blood products and learned tons and always found those special kids give so much back! I also used to go to a cancer camp for a week and be a counselor. I left nursing behind for a week and just had fun with the children.
I left Hopkins to get married and then moved to Hawaii and worked in the pediatric hospital and did some home health work there too. I really loved Hawaii.

Next we moved to Georgia and i worked in Jacksonville for awhile as a peds nurse, radiation oncology nurse and then CVICU nurse. My life changed dramatically as I divorced my husband after 4 1/2 years and then moved on. Many thanks to my dear Duke friends for their support during this time. His loss and my gain because so much has changed since then.

I went to the Phillipines with Operation Smile in 1994 and travelled alot. I went to South America with the rotary group, Africa for 6 weeks, Europe, Canada and basically worked to travel. Then I entered anesthesia school at MCV in Richmond, VA. I emerged as a nurse anesthetist in 1996 and have never looked back.

After grad school I moved to Northern Va after a great trip to New Zealand and Australia and then worked at Fairfax Hospital for 7 1/2 years and now work (part-time) at Fair Oaks Hospital. I also went on another Op Smile mission and gave anesthesia.

I met my wonderful husband, Craig and married him in 2000. I had a son in 2002, Cabell, and a son, Cliff, in 2004. I also have a step daughter, Melanie, who lives with us since her senior year of high school. She is now a sophomore at Syracuse University.

Life is busy, crazy and exhausting. My full time job is a mom and my part time job is being a CRNA. I feel blessed by all that has happened in my life. My life certainly did not turn out like I had imagined but it is wonderful now!

I can't wait to hear about all of you!!

Hi Connie and Ellen,

It is so nice to connect with everyone. Sue Fleming Kistler, Laurie Beth Williams Castro, Annette Baker Hines and I hope to see everyone at the reunion. It would be really fun. Think about it! Duke is so different in so many great ways now...you need to experience it.

After graduation I worked at Johns Hopkins in Adult Oncology until just before my wedding to Jon Brophy (BSEE, BME 1982) at which point I moved to Northern Virginia. I worked at Fairfax Hospital, now Inova Hospital System on Adult Oncology. Two weeks after the wedding Jon announced he wanted a PhD so we moved to NC in 1988 so he could attend UNC-CH to get his PhD in BME.

While in NC I worked at Duke for a several years in various oncology positions. Then moved to UNC to manage their oncology clinic (hated management in a public hospital...hats off to those of you who are managers) then went to grad school to get my MSN and become a CNS while still moonlighting at Duke.

After grad school (Jon was in school for ten years), I accepted the first joint appointment at UNC CH as an undergraduate instructor and an Oncology CNS at Rex Hospital in Raleigh. I loved having a joint appointment.

Had a son Ned in 1995, returned to work, health care reform hit North Carolina and the CNSs were laid off. I lost my job at Rex very shortly after returning from maternity leave. Ouch. Ended up working for four years as the Assistant Director of a huge home health agency and even though I missed oncology all the time, it taught me alot.

Moved to Cincnnati in 1997 so Jon could take a position with a Johnson and Johnson firm, Ethicon Endo Surgery. Worked part time for four years or so in Cincy as a chemotherapy nurse in an oncologist's office.

Miss living in Chapel Hill every day but Cincinnati is a good place to be for families and a reasonable cost of living.

Had a daughter Erin in 1999. Returned to full time work in 2002 as an Adult Oncology CNS. Most of the time I love it. I am very concerned about the direction in which nursing is going. Very concerned. I love teaching and hope I do what I can to get young people interested in nursing.

If anyone else is active in Oncology Nursing Society and goes to their meetings...contact me, we can connect at a meeting! I will be speaking at the meeting next weekend in Seattle.

Take care,
Lynne Russell Brophy

I just returned from a 3 week trip to Nepal where I climbed just short of Annapurna I Base Camp in a trek to raise awareness for ovarian cancer. I developed altitude sickness at 14,900 feet and was not allowed to continue higher. (for info on trek see www.daretodream2008.com)

I married David Ward (Duke Engineering '182) and our son, Brooks is 21 years old & is a junior sculpture major at Bard College in New York State.

I received a paralegal degree in 2004 and work as a nurse paralegal for a medical malpractice defense law firm in Rockville, Maryland

Hi Connie---I actually worked at Fairfax hospital over the summer before our senior year. I have two brothers still in the area. Great update, I love all your travel adventures. So happy that you are in such a good place now too. Best, Debbie Leary Patellos

Hey! I am so glad that people are getting into this. If I can figure it out - anyone can. Kudos to Ellen and her sister for setting this up. There are still lots of missing emails so if anyone know any - pass it on.
Becky - good for you trekking. WOW. That must have been awesome. I could never do that as I would lose fingers, toes etc... I get soooo cold. One day I may get to India.
Debbie - I saw your picture in the alumni magazine with your daughter. You look great. You don't look like you have a daughter that old. Leigh Hallisey Holt has a junior at Duke and Cathy Benn a freshman at UVA. Unbelievable!!! And I have a 1st grader and almost 4 year old.
Inregards to the reunion, nursing will have an affinity group on Sat afternoon from 3:30 til 5:30 pm - that is the talk now. A brunch could be fun too. There will be some nice receptions at the new school of nursing too. It may involve all reunion classes but how many can that be as there was a long period of few grads except grad school. Anyway - as I hear more I will post the tentative plans from the school.
You cannot come to campus and not see the new school - it makes our school look like a dump!!! Plans may include another nursng building too. It is amazing how entrenched nursing is now within the Duke medical community.
So anyway - I love all the news. So interesting and I can't wait to see people in April!

Hi All,
After graduating Duke I spent 6 weeks on a European Tour with my sister and Chris Seigler. After returning it was time to find a job! I got a staff nurse position at Children's Hospital of Phila (CHOP) and worked on a school-aged medical floor for about 13 years, some of which was as an Ass't Head Nurse. I earned my Masters in Nursing of Children at Univ. of Penn in '92 while juggling marriage to Taco (Amaro T84), two sons and a new home. Since we were encouraged to NOT do our clinical experience where we worked I was assigned to St Christopher's Hospital for Children (Phila) Neurology Dept during my third trimester of pregnancy (it was great learning about all the neurological problems that could occur during pregnancy and delivery so as you could imagine Taco was counting fingers and toes and I was looking for dysmorphic features and checking out Apgar scores). They hired me to fill in for my Penn professor in Endocrinology at St Chris while she was on her maternity leave as I was finishing up my maternity leave and graduating. I then started permanently at St Chris's Neuro dept in 1994 and have been there ever since. I work part time and see a variety of patients in addition to running our very large PKU program. Thank God for newborn screening! I'm also active in my church as a deacon and volunteer at the boys' school and community sports teams over the years.

Taco is well, working hard in sales and being an incredible youth baseball coach. He truly has one of the premier travel baseball teams in the East Coast and even in the country. Our sons Robert (18) and Andrew (16) are serious baseball players. Rob committed this summer to play baseball at Univ of VA in '09. Although he was very interested in Duke's baseball program, they were slow in the recruiting process and ultimately could not offer a spot for Rob; oh well, definitely their loss! We are thrilled that he will be in the ACC and will get to those games just like my parents got to many of my field hockey games when Duke travelled up North. Andrew is a sophomore at the William Penn Charter School in Phila and is enjoying high school life and one more year pestering his brother.
Of course I cannot forget to mention the Amaro's exciting Fall of 2008 watching the Phila Phillies win the World Series!! It was so much fun. Just after the parade down Broad Street Taco's brother, Ruben was promoted to General Manager of the Phillies.

Taco and I are planning on going to the reunion and I hope to see many of you there. I keep in touch with some of you through Christmas cards and look forward to seeing many of you after all these years.
